The Aviation Industry is Booming in the Southeast and Rainwater is Helping to Build Its Infrastructure
Atlanta is well known for being the business and transportation hub of the Southeast, but in recent years, its aviation industry has taken on an even greater role as a driver of growth. Anchored by Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport—the busiest passenger airport in the world, with 108 million passengers passing through in 2024—Atlanta is an attractive location not only for airlines, but aerospace companies, logistics providers, and tech innovators as well. These interests benefit from the region’s ample infrastructure as well as its universities, including Georgia Tech, Emory University, and Kennesaw State University, which, to date, have received $2.7 billion for aerospace research and development. Currently, Georgia Tech is the number one producer of aerospace master’s and doctoral level graduates, and Georgia is home to Georgia Quick Start — the number one ranking workforce development program in the nation.
But while Atlanta may hold the crown for aerospace education, infrastructure, and workforce, the region’s growth story doesn’t stop there. States across the Southeast are experiencing a surge in aviation and aerospace development, from manufacturing plants and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facilities to training centers and cargo hubs. This growth is fueled by a mix of factors: competitive business climates, strong military and defense ties, and growing demand for both passenger and cargo services. Together, these trends are reshaping the Southeast into one of the nation’s most dynamic aviation corridors, with Atlanta at its heart.
